Coconut Oil
– INCI Name: COCOS NUCIFERA OIL
– Origin: Vegetable
Coconut oil comes from the fruit of the Cocos nucifera palm tree, which is native to the tropical regions of Asia and the Pacific, but is now cultivated in many parts of the world. The oil is obtained by pressing the coconut meat (pulp) and is used in both the food and cosmetics industries.
Properties of Coconut Oil in Topical Use:
1. Moisturising: Coconut oil is highly moisturising due to its high content of fatty acids, especially lauric acid, which helps to keep the skin soft and nourished.
2. Antimicrobial: Lauric acid also has antimicrobial properties, which makes it an ally in the fight against bacteria, fungi and viruses on the skin, making it useful in the treatment of conditions such as acne or dermatitis.
3. Anti-inflammatory: Helps to reduce inflammation and irritation, being useful in the treatment of sensitive skin or minor burns.
4. Antioxidant: Protects the skin from free radical damage, helping to prevent premature skin ageing.
5. Healing: Stimulates cell regeneration and can help heal minor wounds or grazes.
Coconut oil is also highly valued for hair care. Its moisturising and nourishing properties help prevent frizz, restore softness and give dry or damaged hair a natural shine.
