Glycerine

– INCI Name: GLYCERIN

– Origin: Vegetable

Glycerin (or glycerol) is an alcohol found in animal and vegetable fats and oils, and is obtained as a by-product of soap and biodiesel manufacture. It can also be produced synthetically from propylene.

Benefits of Glycerin in Topical Use:

1. Moisturising and moisturising: Glycerin is extremely effective at attracting water, which makes it an excellent moisturiser. This property makes it very useful in cosmetics and skin care, as it helps maintain moisture in the skin and prevents dehydration.

2. Emollient properties: Because of its ability to soften the skin, glycerin is used in many creams, lotions and ointments. It forms a barrier that prevents water loss, which helps to keep the skin soft and supple.

3. Viscosity: Glycerin has a high viscosity, which makes it a good thickening agent in liquid solutions and cosmetic products.

4. Improves the skin barrier: This protects the skin from external factors such as pollution, wind and environmental aggressions. This protective function also helps to reduce skin irritation and redness.

5. Antibacterial: Glycerin also has mild antimicrobial properties, which may contribute to its ability to preserve products and protect the skin from minor infections.

6. Reduces wrinkles and fine lines: By drawing water into the skin, glycerin can give a temporary plumping effect, smoothing the skin and making fine lines and wrinkles less visible.

Glycerin is a key ingredient in cosmetics due to its moisturising, emollient, soothing and protective properties. It is suitable for all skin types, especially dry or sensitive skin, and is used in a wide variety of products such as creams, lotions, cleansers, gels and hair care products.
